Actor Paul Walker, best known for his role in the Fast and Furious franchise, died on Saturday afternoon after a car accident in Valencia, CA. He was 40 years old.

“It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend’s car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences,” a post on his official Facebook page said.

“Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the Fast and Furious films, and to countless fans.  We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul’s family,” a rep for Universal said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Station confirmed to EW that deputies responded to a traffic collision in Valencia on Saturday afternoon and discovered a vehicle in open flames. The accident appeared to be a single-car collision against a fixed object near the road. The fire department extinguished the flames and located two bodies trapped inside the vehicle, both of whom were later pronounced dead.

Walker looked just about perfect, and in his too-brief career he became a new kind of character actor: The perfect man who wasn’t quite perfect enough. In Varsity Blues, he’s the perfect quarterback who gets injured. In The Skulls, he’s the perfect WASP who refuses to be as perfectly evil as his father. In She’s All That, he’s the perfect high school popular guy — and the villain of the movie, the exactly right vision of popularity that Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook are rebelling against. It feels just right that his first major role was in Pleasantville, where he played a perfect hunk with the perfect name Skip Martin.

Walker always played guys like that. Guys with names like Skip and Lance and Dean and Caleb. And Brian. That was the role that defined him. As Brian O’Conner, he was the star of The Fast and the Furious, the film where he played the perfect vision of the White Dude attempting to infiltrate a new multicultural world. Across six  Fast & Furious films — and a seventh one, coming next summer — Walker turned O’Conner into a fascinating, perfectly modern icon. As the Fast franchise evolved in its fascinating trajectory, O’Conner became a smaller but still utterly pivotal role. Because Walker graciously stepped aside to give the limelight to other stars: To Tyrese Gibson in 2 Fast 2 Furious, to Dwayne Johnson in Fast Five, to the whole car-chasing superteam crew in this past summer’s megahit Furious Six. Part of the sheer wonder of watching the films is seeing how Walker’s Brian evolves: From a callow young undercover agent to a family man, from a teen-movie protagonist with beautiful hair to a genuine hero with something to lose.

It is a tragedy of pure reality that Walker died in a car accident, since so many of his best moments on screen showed the actor defying the laws of automotive physics. And it is a tragedy that we rarely got to see Walker explore his darker side. There were glimmers of that in Into the Blue, the underrated pulp gem where he played the perfectly handsome beach bum with a sudden ludicrous chance at wealth; or in the hyperkinetic Running Scared, where Walker was a low-level mafia dude so graceful his name is Gazelle.  When Walker died, he was 40. He looked much younger. He was so handsome. Just about perfect, you might say.

Twitter Reacts in Shock and Sadness to Paul Walker’s Death  By Michael Rothman

Nov 30, 2013

The news tonight that Paul Walker was killed in a car crash left friends, family, co-stars and even other actors who had never met the “Fast and Furious” star, but admired his work in complete shock.

“Sadly I must confirm that Paul did pass away this afternoon,” Walker’s rep Ame Van Iden said in an email.

His official Facebook page followed up his rep’s message with, “It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide.

According to the statement, Walker, 40, was a passenger in a friend’s car, and both were killed in the crash.

“We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news,” the group’s statement said. “Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences.”

His “Fast and Furious” co-stars like Vin Diesel and Tyrese Gibson commented about the loss of their friend on Instagram.

“My heart is hurting so bad no one can make me believe this is real Father God I pray that you send clarity over this cause I just don’t understand My heart hurts it’s broken no one can convince me that this is real…. Prayer warriors please pray real hard for his only child, his daughter and family… #HeartOfAnAngel13YrsFamilyForeverWeJustCelebreatedYour40thBirthday….. My God… My God… I can’t,” an obviously shaken Gibson wrote next to a photo of him and Walker.

Ludacris also posted his own message on Instagram, “Your humble spirit was felt from the start, wherever you blessed your presence you always left a mark, we were like brothers & our birthdays are only 1 day apart, now You will forever hold a place in all of our hearts@paulwalker legacy will live on forever. R.I.P.”

'Fast & Furious' star Paul Walker killed in car crash
By Alan Duke, CNN

Santa Clarita, California (CNN) -- Actor Paul Walker, who shot to fame as star of the high-octane street racing franchise "Fast & Furious," died in a fiery car crash in Southern California on Saturday. He was 40.

Walker was in the passenger seat of a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, driven by a racing team partner, that slammed into a light pole and burst into flames in an office park in the community of Valencia in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles north of Hollywood.

Walker's publicist Ame van Iden confirmed his death Saturday. The driver, identified by CNN affiliate KCAL-TV as Roger Rodus, also died.

"Thank you all for your condolences and prayers while we mourn the loss of our loved ones," read a message posted on the Facebook page for Always Forever, the high-performance car shop owned by Rodus.

Los Angeles Coroner Investigator Dana Bee told CNN on Sunday it would likely take 48 hours to officially identify the remains taken from the twisted wreckage. The families are gathering dental records for use in the identification, which is necessary because of the condition of the bodies, Bee said.

Speed was a factor in the crash, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said. A 45 mph speed limit sign was attached to the light pole knocked down by the Porsche.

The wreck took place about 3:30 p.m. just a few hundred yards from the shop owned by Rodus. Both men had attended a holiday toy drive for Walker's charity, Reach Out Worldwide, hosted at the shop Saturday afternoon.

Antonio Holmes told the Santa Clarita Valley Signal newspaper that he was at the charity event when Walker and Rodus left for a ride in the Porsche.

"We all heard from our location," Holmes told the Signal. "It's a little difficult to know what it was. Someone called it in and said it was a vehicle fire. We all ran around and jumped in cars and grabbed fire extinguishers and immediately went to the vehicle. It was engulfed in flames. There was nothing. They were trapped. Employees, friends of the shop. We tried. We tried. We went through fire extinguishers."

A crowd of grieving fans, curious onlookers and media surrounded the crash site for hours, watching as investigators and firefighters worked to extract the bodies from the wreckage. A memorial of flowers, left by fans, remained on the charred roadside Sunday.

Walker and Rodus had planned Saturday as a day to help survivors of victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The car shop website invited customers to the Charity Toy Drive & Automotive Social Gathering.

"During the holiday season, many economically disadvantaged children from around the world are faced with the same dilemma year after year; the lacking of joy and cheer," the invitation read. "Our goal here is to be able to provide aid to these less fortunate children in hopes of helping them grow up to become confident, responsible and productive young adults."

Walker's charity is described as "a network of professionals with first responder skill-sets who augment local expertise when natural disasters strike in order to accelerate relief efforts."

The website lists Rodus as captain and lead driver of the shop's racing team. Walker is also listed as a team driver.

Hollywood left stunned by Walker's death

Walker's generosity

Tales of the actor's philanthropy are not new. CNN confirmed one story from a decade ago when Walker noticed a young U.S. military veteran shopping with his fiance for a wedding ring in a Santa Barbara jewelry store.

"The groom was just back from duty in Iraq, and he was going to be deployed again soon and wanted to buy a wedding ring, but he said he just could not afford it," saleswoman Irene King told CNN. "I don't think the soldier realized how expensive those rings are, about $10,000."

Although Walker noticed them, the couple apparently did not know who he was, King said.

"Walker called the manger over and said, 'Put that girl's ring on my tab,' " she said. "Walker left all his billing info, and it was a done deal. The couple was stunned. She was thrilled and could not believe someone did this."

King called it "the most generous thing I have ever seen."

Box office success

Walker's career began on the small screen, first with a commercial for Pampers when he was 2, and then with parts in shows such as "Highway to Heaven" and "Touched by an Angel."

His first few movie roles were as supporting characters in teen flicks, most notably in "Varsity Blues."

His career really took off when he was cast as undercover cop Brian O'Conner infiltrating a street-racing gang in 2001's "The Fast and the Furious."

The box-office success of the surprise summer hit yielded numerous sequels. And along with Vin Diesel, Walker was one of the franchise stalwarts.

At the time of his death, he was working on the seventh film of the franchise, due out next year.

Walker wasn't just a car enthusiast on the silver screen; offscreen, the actor competed in the Redline Time Attack racing series.

On his verified Twitter account, Walker described himself as "outdoorsman, ocean addict, adrenaline junkie ... and I do some acting on the side."

Walker also is the star of "Hours," an independent film scheduled to be released December 13 about a father struggling to keep his newborn infant alive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Twitter and other social media exploded with reactions to Walker's death.

"Completely numb and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Paul Walker," wrote one.

Hollywood condolences came from Will Smith, Jack Osbourne, DMX and others.

"No, @RealPaulWalker. No. No. No," tweeted actress Alyssa Milano. Walker appeared with her as a guest star in the '80s comedy "Who's the Boss?" "Rest with the angels. You. Sweet boy. #beauty #love #RIP."

Walker is survived by his 15-year-old daughter, Meadow.

Paul Walker’s Family Encourages Fans to Donate to His Charity Reach Out Worldwide
By Jeff Sneider

December 2, 2013

The “Fast and Furious” star founded the organization, which aims to keep his memory alive

As Hollywood mourns for fallen “Fast and Furious” star Paul Walker, the actor’s family is encouraging fans to donate to his charity organization in lieu of flowers and other gifts.

Walker founded Reach Out Worldwide with the genuine desire to help others, and his family aims to keep his memory alive through ROWW, where donations are now being accepted.

A representative for Walker’s talent agency said that the actor’s family appreciates the outpouring of love and goodwill and that it’s comforting for them to know that the son, brother, and father they love so much is equally adored, respected, and appreciated by so many.

Details for Walker’s memorial service are not available yet.
