Happy Autism awareness month!

Today marks the sixth annual Autism awareness month, everything lights up blue!
Autism is a developmental disability that remains with a person for his or her whole life. This condition affects the brain's functions. The first signs usually appear before a child is three years old. People with autism often:
Find social interaction difficult.
Have problems with verbal and non-verbal communication.
Demonstrate restrictive and repetitive behavior.
Have a limited set of interests and activities.

I want to add: I have known it is Autism Awareness month and did just hear on the news that in the last decade there has been an increase in Autism - this is NOT true in my professional opinion as a medical professional -I believe it is this: The medical community is FINALLY diagnosing correctly and there has been many people in the last many decades that were not diagnosed and in the last decade have been. So awareness is very important and we must continue to support spreading the news!!

Thank you Admin! I have heard of that report too, and I totally agree with what you are saying. It's good that we are having more of an awareness of this disorder. I myself have Asperger's Syndrome which is a milder form of autism. What I would like to get out there is that autistic people are just like everyone else, we're just a bit different.

There is a school for autistic and mentally handicapped children right up the road from my house. It has a HUGE field probably about half the size of a city block and has 3 or 4 big buildings. For the past few years in April they always have blue puzzle pieces out everywhere in the field and they have it lit up blue. It's quite a sight to see and I am so glad that people are supporting awareness.
One of my cousins also has Asperger syndrome- it was really hard for him to deal with other people and teachers when he was younger- but he's 22 years old now and is living a fairly normal life- you wouldn't be able to tell that he has the disorder. He's extremely intelligent and graduated at the top of his class- he wants to go into video game design and computer programming in the next couple years.
