This Day in Space HERstory
This day, June 18, 1983, 30 years ago Sally Ride was the youngest and first woman astronaut to go to space. She flew on the Challenger and got her job at NASA by answering an ad! She won the position in a pool of several thousand other applicants. She started a program for teens called "Sally Ride's Space Camp" which encouraged upcoming young adults who loved math and science to pursue their dreams.
Sally retired from her role as an astronaut and taught physics at a university in the UC (CA) system. Sadly, she died last year from pancreatic cancer at age 61.
Ride Sally ride!!
