Is It Scary was released as a single, from Blood On The Dance Floor, HIStory In The Mix, co-written and co-produced with Janet's producers Jimmy Jam (James Harris III) and Terry Lewis. It wasn't commercially and universally released as it was only limited and available to certain countries - US, UK and Netherlands.

There was also a promo release on top of the limited single release not just on CD but on vinyl. Despite the popularity of the song, it was also released with various remixes including those that are suitably mixed specifically for night clubs and dance floors. Though originally intended to be included on the Addams Family Values movie and HIStory album itself, it was eventually featured on Blood On The Dance Floor as one of the new tracks.

It was also featured in the short film Ghosts, where the Mayor (Michael, who else?) breaks out into Michael's dance routine to this track. It embodies and musically envisages the scary, haunting and spooky nature with its lyrical narrative-type singing, like only Michael could, that matches the macabre theme, and being grotesque before your eyes. Such an innovative and enthralling track that truly isn't scary after all, just a pure musical work of art.
