Hi all,
The folks at Simon & Schuster have approved the cover of Michael Jackson, Inc.—and like the book's subject, it's truly one-of-a-kind. Let me tell you the back-story (the short version).
To capture Michael Jackson as he’d never been captured before, Simon & Schuster's Atria imprint commissioned contemporary pop artist Borbay. He used his signature medium—acrylic paint over a collage of New York Post headlines—to interpret my words and the King of Pop’s career in a single, arresting image. Borbay, dubbed the Big Apple’s most creative resident by Time Out New York, has been recognized by publications from BBC World to Wall Street Journal Japan. His subjects range from Kanye West to the Guggenheim Museum, earning him comparisons to Andy Warhol for his deft manipulation of pop imagery.
"I watched every one of [Michael's] music videos in preparation for this project, and what I realized was this: he was so much a part of my formative years, I could scarcely believe it.," says Borbay. "His presence … brand … impact … business acumen—has always felt electric."
For the longer version of the story—including stage-by-stage images of Borbay's journey creating the image (many of them in full color) and details on the fortuitous circumstances by which he and I became acquainted—check out Borbay's in-depth blog post on the creation of the cover art.
Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for more.
Best,
Zack
PS: As we move toward the book's June 3rd launch date, here's some advance praise for Michael Jackson, Inc. in case you haven't seen it yet (pre-order here)...

“A fascinating, fresh, detailed account of how Michael Jackson changed the game for artists in the entertainment industry. Packed with new angles and insights, Greenburg avoids cheap sensationalism in favor of real, research-based reporting. The result is at once a story of Jackson’s remarkable business acumen, as well as a cautionary tale about the price of the ticket. While Jackson’s success came at a great cost, reading this book makes clear how he paved the way for generations of artists to come.”
- Joseph Vogel, author of Man in the Music: The Creative Life and Work of Michael Jackson
“Zack follows every step of the way as the King of Pop becomes the Citizen Kane of Pop, creating an empire so strong that even Jackson’s most mind-boggling excesses couldn’t bring it down. Michael Jackson Inc. is the deepest examination and most resounding proof yet that Jackson was as pioneering in business as he was in music — a pathfinder in the establishment of Artist as Brand.”
- Jem Aswad, editor-in-chief of SPIN
“We all know Michael Jackson worked hard to become the undisputed King of Pop. Zack Greenburg’s well researched Michael Jackson, Inc. follows the money and shows us how he learned from the best, defied the odds, and turns out to have been just as good at business—making this a fun, compelling read and one of the most incisive looks at the business of show business at its highest level.”
- Fab 5 Freddy, hip-hop pioneer and longtime host of Yo! MTV Raps
“What a story Zack Greenburg tells well, one that is as absorbing and exciting as Michael Jackson on stage in his prime. It’s a modern, pop version of Citizen Kane.”
- Steve Forbes, editor-in-chief of Forbes
“The King of Pop is perfectly captured by Zack O’Malley Greenburg, who has a journalist’s eye for detail with Michael Jackson, Inc. The words dance across the page, the mark of a writer with vivid, natural storytelling talent. Bravo, Zack!”

This book should be well worth the read. For those of you who don't know him, Zack has written about Michael in Forbes magazine for some time now. His articles are always studied, factual and he treats Michael with respect. He doesn't sugar coat things but he's fair. He's also close with Joe Vogel so you know he can't go too far wrong. My recommendation: if you haven't pre-ordered it, do.

Re: Michael Jackson, Inc: The Cover
I am so happy that I had pre-ordered it and now have it in m hot little hands. 3 books to get read!!! And one left foot that is aching and throbbing so much that I can't stay awake to get at it. Hopefully soon. Even with all the pain I've been going through it was worth it especially looking up and seeing MJ in his BAD outfit keeping me company!
And to all of you...enjoy whatever it is you are doing.

Re: Michael Jackson, Inc: The Cover
Hi everyone, another night of not sleeping too well so what better to do than chat about Michael Jackson. I just finished reading Zack's book and what a great read And I finally got one of the answers to one of my obsessive questions about the Michael Jackson name. That is one of my research projects that I am going to get to the bottom of if it drives me around the bend As I've said often our names are important to us...they are us. so back to Zack's book. MJ's name is Michael Joe Jackson but he started using Michael Joseph Jackson to run one of his many companies. Now that puts my mind at ease...I just have to track down Prince Michael Jackson I. I'm sort of thinking that someone in their not totally thinking mode heard the Michael Joseph Jackson name and then "assumed" that that was Prince's name Michael Joseph Jackson Jr and for some reason they call him Prince as his nickname Now we all know what the word assume means...*** "of" u "and" me Then the smart ones came back into the picture and got Blanket's name right except that you need a I (first)before you can have a II (second). So please bear with me while I play the Michael Jackson children's name game and I would certainly appreciate any input you may stumble upon that looks the least bit possible to be true.
Again thanks for putting up with me and my weird obsessions. I will be also starting some other "new" topics probably one tomorrow...a wonderful one from the "Earth Song" Opus that Joseph Vogel wrote, again another great read and I can hardly wait to tell you what awesome things about our Michael that I gleaned out of that book...stuff that for sure I will need Admin's help and a lot of you established members of the fan~mily. Great things that we can do to help keep Michael's name out even more and worthwhile projects that he would definitely approve of.
Well good day for now. Happy Independence Day to our American fan~mily members. I so look for to the Boston Pops Orchestra fireworks show and I look in at the Macy's parade a bit but I really like the orchestra and hope that I didn't miss it...I didn't see it in the show listings for Friday night so I hope they are saving it for Saturday or Sunday.
Have a good evening/day and I'll be back

Re: Michael Jackson, Inc: The Cover
Hi ijcsluMJ, here is where I discovered that Michael Joe Jackson started using Michael Joseph Jackson as the name of one of his many companies. MJ was definitely a sly business man because he was talking with Paul McCartney when they were recording and Paul started to tell MJ that owning publishing rights was where the real money was and later the McCartney/Lennon publishing catalog ATV came up for sale. Michael approached Yoko Ono to see if she was interested in buying it and Paul approached and wanted her to go halves with him because the asking price was $41 million and Paul didn't want to put out the whole amount and of course Yoko wasn't interested. John Branca was back working as MJ's lawyer and in the boardroom MJ slipped John a note that said don't bicker about the price I want this and so John upped the amount that MJ would pay and he got it immediately and it is now worth billions of dollars. There is a photo of the slip of paper in the book. Boy it's a beautiful autograph that Michael signs but his regular handwriting is quite sloppy and his spelling and yet he supposedly did well in school. Regardless of the writing he was very intelligent and fooled many people with his soft voice and shy appearance...sly like a fox! It took Paul by surprise that MJ bought the pushing rights and then Paul got angry with MJ and said that MJ just picks people's brains and then learns more about the business and slips in and takes the spoils. Paul stopped speaking to Michael and didn't invite him and the kids over to his farm anymore. I forget how many years Paul didn't speak to Michael but eventually he was at least civil to MJ. And of course, MJ saw nothing wrong with what he had done. He said that if Paul had wanted the ATV publishing then he should have bought it..he certainly had the money! The fellow that did sell to MJ asked for one favour. He had a daughter, niece or someone special to him and her name was Penny and he asked MJ if he could keep Penny Lane so he could give it to her and Michael said yes Michael had John looking for any songs to buy the publishing...he got some Sly and the Family Stone songs which are one of his favourite groups. Then he arranged/fought with Sony that he wanted the publish rights to all of the songs he wrote for himself and that's one company that he named Mijac Publishing. If you read the notes either before the words to a song or after it always lists who wrote the song and what company is handling collecting the royalties...I believe Mijac is published through Warner/Tamarlane and ASCAP collects the royalties. There is one other company that collects royalties and that's BMI. I'm just spouting this off the top of my tired head and I got most of the info from the Zack O'Malley Greenburg book. Great, great reading Got to go back to bed and try to fall asleep again.
Well I really am going back to bed, the cleaning lady comes today and while I don't have to do anything I like to talk MJ stuff with her

Ok I have to get this book!!
Michael was so smart when it came to the business, he knew what he wanted. He learned about things along the way, I love it how he just had the strive to learn more and more about the business, and that is how he became the savy business man that he was later in life. Bless him!

Re: Michael Jackson, Inc: The Cover
He certainly was a clever man but he did let "I'm Michael Jackson" go to his head at times. He thought he deserved things because he was Michael Jackson and I'm seeing that the more different authors I read on him. I don't believe that I am reading a lot of junk on him as they all praise him but as I said he would at times let his talent go to his head. I guess we all have parts of our egos that get out of hand sometimes but I still love him to pieces and miss him so much. And certainly everything he did was for bettering his career...like when he opens a show, stand in one position for 8 seconds, then turn your head and hold for 8 seconds, then take your sunglasses off and hold for another 8 seconds then "Hurt Me" on with the show!!
