A musical verison of Goodfellas meets Dreamgirls? That's how a band of music producers who helped manage Michael Jackson’s career are pitching The Man, a new stage musical about the backstage making of a superstar, according to Variety. Inspired by the rise of music icons like Jackson, Elvis Presley and Whitney Houston, the musical is heading to Las Vegas this fall or in spring 2014, and is created by Mark Lamica, Quincy Krashna, Jerry Greenberg, Raymond Del Barrio and Larry Hart. The team is also aiming to bring the tuner to Broadway should it prove to be a hit. Casting, theater location and an exact timeline have not yet been announced.
The Man is a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a fictional music superstar from the point of view of his manager. Featuring a book by Lamica and Grammy-winning composer Hart, the production will feature original music and follow the titular superstar from the 1980s through the 2000s. "We want this project to be a compelling, gritty, entertaining tale, that tells the story of the price of fame in a new way," said Lamica, in a statement.
The producing team also collaborated on the pop-rock musical Sisterella, an update of the Cinderella fairytale. Jackson served an executive producer when the musical debuted at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1996.
The musical may not feature Jackson's tunes, but that's no reason to not spend your next five minutes jamming to "Man in the Mirror."
